GeoRangers Privacy Policy
Effective October 3, 2026
What GeoRangers uses on the phone
- Location. To show distance and direction to a geocache, to average GPS readings while you stand still, and, if a grown-up turns on car treasure alerts, to notice nearby caches while driving. Location is processed on the device and is never stored off the phone or transmitted. You can revoke it at any time in Settings.
- Camera. To take the "found it" photo. The photo is written to GeoRangers's own private storage, protected by the phone's file encryption. It is not added to your Photos library and is not uploaded.
- Speech. Clues are read aloud with Apple's on-device speech synthesis. Nothing is recorded; GeoRangers does not use the microphone.
- Maps. Map tiles, satellite imagery and road directions come from Apple Maps under Apple's privacy terms. GeoRangers sends Apple only what a map needs to draw.
- Ground elevation. To draw contour lines under the map, GeoRangers asks the U.S. Geological Survey's public elevation service for the heights of the ground around a geocache. The request names the cache's location, never the child's position, and the answer is kept on the phone so it is asked once.
Geocache data
Caches enter GeoRangers from a GPX file you provide, usually a pocket query exported from your own geocaching account. GeoRangers stores that file's contents on the phone so hunts work offline. GeoRangers does not sign in to any geocaching service, does not create accounts for children, and does not send finds anywhere. Logging a find on geocaching.com is something a grown-up does there, by hand. GeoRangers is not affiliated with Geocaching HQ.
Children
GeoRangers is designed to be held by children, supervised by a grown-up. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, there is nothing to share, sell, or profile, and nothing that needs parental consent to collect. Every grown-up function sits behind a two-second hold and a multiplication problem so a child cannot reach settings or links by tapping. GeoRangers contains no third-party advertising or analytics and complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by design: no data in, no data out.
Third parties
Apple's system frameworks (Maps, speech, file protection) and the U.S. Geological Survey's elevation service, described above. GeoRangers embeds no third-party SDKs. If GeoRangers is downloaded through the App Store, Apple's own privacy policy governs that transaction.
Your data, your phone
Everything GeoRangers knows lives in the app's container on your phone. Deleting the app deletes all of it: the caches, the finds, the stickers, the photos. There is no copy anywhere else, so there is nothing for us to access, export, or erase on your behalf.
Changes
If GeoRangers ever gains a feature that moves data off the phone, for example signing in to a geocaching service through its official API, this policy will say so plainly before that version ships, and the effective date above will change.
